International flows
The level of foreign investment in European countries depends on local regulation, cultural practices, as well as on the size of internal markets. Employment in foreign affiliates has already reached 25% in the manufacturing sector for ten countries. European affiliates* of United States multinational companies employ around four million people in EU 15.
*Majority-owned non bank affiliates

The Transnationality index is the average of four economic indicators related to foreign investment in a given country.

Did you know?
• The highest transnationality index (2002) in the world is 81.6 in Hong-Kong. Belgium and Luxembourg are ranked second with 77.1.
• Transnationality index in:           United States: 7.7           Japan:  1.0
• In 2003, affiliates* of US multinationals employed 9.8 million persons in the world, almost half of them – 4.2 millions – in Europe.
