Employment
Less than half of the EU 25 population is counted as “active”. Northern countries and UK have high employment rates; lowest activity levels are recorded in a few Mediterranean and new member states. Unemployment rates – in % of active population – vary sharply from one country to another. Throughout Europe, higher education levels consistently pull employment rates up.

The employment rate reflects the percentage of employed people in the population aged 15-64.
