Diversity
The work status of men and women differs significantly, as a higher percentage of men are counted active.  Men’s and women’s employment rates are similar in Nordic countries, whereas the gap is wider in a few Mediterranean states and in Ireland. Foreign employment varies considerably between countries and reflects geographical and cultural proximity as much as history.

Percentages in the key to the map measure the employment gap between men and women.

Did you know?
• 22 million men and 11 million women are self-employed in EU 25.
• In EU 25, almost 79% of active women are employees vs. less than 73,5% of active men.
• On average, the employment rate difference between men and women is 15%.
• In Luxembourg & Switzerland, the proportion of foreign employees is 30% and 25% respectively.
